I get a periodic, and recurring throbbing (pulsating) in my right ear, often brought on by yawning, and quite frequently during sleep, which can sometimes last for an hour or more before gradually abating. I also get recurring pain in my left ear (deep and disconcerting) which can last a week or more. For some reason both conditions do not occur simultaneously, but rather take turns. I've had my ears checked by a number of doctors over a period of time, and all, apart from one who approximately one year ago diagnosed an infection and perforated ear drum (in my left ear), find nothing wrong. Nevertheless, these conditions persist, and frequently return. There are no accompanying symptoms, such as dizziness, hearing loss etc. Can you diagnose?

Throbbing is caused by blood flow, usually it's caused by how much pressure or how much blood is being pumped through that particular spot, where the throbbing occurred. Stress can cause throbbing or when you're around loud music, your head sometimes can't handle that much intensity so it starts throbbing and it gives you real bad headaches. Rest usually is a cure for throbbing. If the throbbing usually is causing pain, it is due to inflammation. (: hope this answer satisfies you (: (: (: (:!

Your ear may throb when you have an ear infection. The buildup of fluid in the inner or middle ear and the resulting pressure is the reason for the throbbing.
