Vaginal flatulence occurs mostly during or after sexual intercourse. Air is introduced into the vagina by the pumping action of the penis and stays trapped there until the woman coughs, laughs or simply sits upright. At the time, the gas escapes, causing what is called in slang a pussy fart or queef. It is usually odorless since it doesn't involve the intestines. Those that do smell badly could be part of a dangerous condition called colovaginal fistula, which must be seen by a physician immediately. Air may come out of the vagina as part of sexual intercourse, and create embarrassment or laughter, and vaginal flatulence has even found a role in pornography. Never introduce air into the vagina with force, such as blowing into the vagina during cunninlingus. It can and has caused air embolus, which can be life-threatening to the woman and to her unborn child if she is pregnant. An air embolus, or gas embolus as it's more commonly called, is when gas bubbles enter the blood stream. Hollywood film-style has often portrayed a gas embolus death as having a small syringe full of air being injected into a person, who then dies of cardiac arrest. In the real world, it would take an extremely large syringe full of air to accomplish this and even then, it might not work. Death may occur if a large bubble of gas becomes lodged in the heart, stopping blood from flowing from the right ventricle to the lungs. However, the amount of gas necessary for this to happen is quite variable, and also depends on a number of other factors, such as body position.
