∙ 11y agoThere are at the present time (2013) approximately 7 billion people in the world, and we collectively have an enormous appetite for water. We consume a lot of it. And there is only so much fresh water available in our world. Right now, demand exceeds supply.

∙ 8y agoCalifornia water shortages are a combination of several things.High population, agriculture and waste have contributed to California's water problems. The aquifer and several lakes have been drained due to overuse and drought. Water also comes to the state from the Colorado River in Arizona, but that has been reduced by drought as well. Water laws regarding being able to use the excess water left by other entities have also started to be enforced, so that is less available. In the San Francisco/Yosemite area, the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir was built in the 1920s to provide water for that city. It is now having problems. Politics regarding jobs in agricultural areas, and use of water in populated areas are being tossed back and forth. In the next few years, effects of global warming will increase, so no solution is in sight.
