How do you use chat rooms safely?

There are many rules in a chatroom, but it really depends on your age. If you are a year 7 at balshaws (like I was) you get this sheet to do, and I got it over the half-term. Unfortunately I didn't do it, because there wasn't a question answer for this. So for your convinience, here are all the answers that I got:

• NEVER give out your full name
• NEVER give out your adress
• NEVER give out your mobile or home telephone number
• NEVER give out your e-mail adress
• Don't put a link to IM (Instant Messaging)
• Don't post a picture of yourself or one that is inappropriate
• Don't post a link to a blog diary that detaily tells people what you do everyday
• Don't give out your family member's detail's
• NEVER belive everything people tell you

No chat rooms are safe, you talk to people that you don't know about random things and something could just pop up for instance, Hi, where do you live? (This is an over obvious mistake of the chatter.) If you should get something like that, i recomend you tell your parents. Or better yet, just stay off those chat rooms. (Louwrens Holtzhausen)

The best way to stay safe in a chat room is to avoidthem. You have no idea who you are talking to.

Other ways include:

• Never give out personal information. Personal info includes but is not limited to the following; last names, parents names, parents work, teachers, neighbors, age, what you look like (brown hair, blue eyes, freckles, glasses, etc.), sports teams, schools, camps, churches, pictures, addresses of any type, phone numbers of any type, friends' names, your street/city/state. This may seem so banal, but this is SO crucial. There are SO many stories of young girls who think they are giving out their address to 18 year-old's but they are really 40-something pedophiles or human traffickers.
• If they are asking for personal information and being persistent, it is a good chance they are predators. Block them immediately.
• Learn how predators work. Know their tactics.
• Be careful sharing interests. Predators know how to manipulate children. "You like football? So do I! Where do you play?" Do not fall for this! There is a story in one of the links below (Chatdanger.com) of a predator tracking a young boy after finding "football" in common in a chat room. The boy had given the predator (who was posing at another boy) his football team information, because he had thought they were going to the same summer camp.
• If you are wanting to chat every day with the same person/people, get off.
• Never give out locations, pictures, or schedule.
• Remember it is live. Like in real life, you cannot take back what you say. Do not say anything to someone over the internet you would not say to them in real life. Be kind!
• Do not strike up an online relationship. If you find yourself ever yearning to get on a chat room to talk to someone, get off.
• Don't meet anyone you meet in a chat room. For all you know, they are a human trafficker, registered sex offender, or some other criminal.
• Don't think you are exempt from these rules, or that it "won't happen to you".
• If you feel uncomfortable, leave and block the people you are uncomfortable about. Better safe than sorry. YOU ARE SMART. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS.
• If the topic turns to sex, get out.
• If a person is flattering you WAY too much, get off.

When on chat rooms:

you should never:

give out your full name; address, phone number or personal information

any personal stuff like SSN, Credit card number, any info you use when banking

You shouldn't give out personal information because people may be able to figure out who you are and give you a not so nice visit. You should never put your information on the internet NEVER NEVER becase once something is on the internet, even if you delete, it will be circulating the internet forever.

If safety is your concern, then you should understand how the internet works and what a chatroom is collecting. There is no information that gives out where you are located besides your IP Address which points to where the Tower is (from where your internet is coming from). If someone were to get this information and look it up, they wouldn't be able to exactly pin point your location but they would know what city you were in for example. You can avoid all of this by using an Internet IP Proxy and you can Google those and find alot of information regarding them.

Not really a way to be "safe", but you can always block/report someone if they annoy/bother you. Don't give out any personal info.If they ask for a name, give them a fake one.Things like that will keep you safe.Beware of the many tricks predators use. That's something I like to call "online candy".
