Candle wax, or Paraffin, its scientific name, is a heavy hydrocarbon, which means consists of carbon and hydrogen.
When a candle is burned, the Paraffin wax reacts with O2 (oxygen gas) in the air to produce water and carbon dioxide.
The wick of a candle is made up of absorbent fibres. The water vapour that comes off when the paraffin wax is heated is absorbed by these fibres. Because the wick is now damp from the water vapour, it cannot be burned and therefore maintains a flame.
