Best Answer

The part of the carrot plant that grows underground, the part we eat, is normally orange. Other varieties are available in purple, red, white, or yellow.

Above the ground, the carrot plant has a mass of green leaves that manufacture the nutrients that are stored in the carrot root.

Carrot ColorsCarrots as we know them now are orange but the original "carrot" was a small, thin, bitter root that was nowhere near the revered vegetable it is today. Purple, red and even black were the normal colors until the resourceful Dutch agriculturalists took an interest in them. The Dutch agriculturalists started growing them to be sweet and standardizing the orange color we know them as today.

Daucus Carota belongs to the order Umbelliferae are common along roadsides and in pastures.

Here is a list of the colors the simple carrot could be found in throughout the years.

Purple, white, pale yellow, red, black and starting in the 15th century various shades of orange.

According to historical information from the famous World Carrot Museum, the definitive guide to the history of carrots, Orange carrots were around at least 1000 years before 15th century!

Nope. Many lettuces and cole crops (kale, cabbage, etc) are purple, blue, red, or other colors.

Other plants that we consider to be vegetables (tomatoes, eggplant, peppers) are really the fruits of the plant, but still can come in an array of colors.
