25 years ago I jumped in the first car that was owned by one of my friends. We had a crash almost immediately and learnt that yellow, the colour of the car, was the most unlucky in accidents. Of course this was before the web, so it was accepted without question. I have since heard that yellow is actually the safest colour, but again without any real evidence.

There is a study from New Zealand that found that in a one year period, drivers of black, brown and green cars had the most serious injuries, whilst drivers of silver cars had 50% less accidents than drivers of white cars. One could possibly explain statistics like this by saying "oh but there are twice as many white cars etc", but according to DuPont Automotive's 2003 Color Popularity Report, the top three colours (silver, white and black) account for more than 50% of new cars manufactured for North America, so silver and white are pretty close in terms of numbers on the road.

I recently crashed my white car, on my own, in the middle of the day, in good conditions, with no other cars on the road, into a lampost. It didn't recover. I have now bought a silver one.
