Islam is a worldwide religion that is practiced by people of many cultures. Wedding customs, include dress, vary widely even within one country.
Islam does not permit dowry, which is a gift given by the bride to the groom. On the contrary, one of the requirements of Islamic marriage is dower, which means that the groom gives the bride a gift. This gift often consists of money and jewelry, but could also consist of anything of value, from a simple copy of the Qur'an to real estate to the promise of provision of education.
