UV
On a countryside walk recently, very hot day 27c and wearing a bright orange t-shirt.
My partner was wearing a light pink top. I had swarms of insects on me and couldn't get them off quick enough before they landed again. I took the shirt off and continued topless and was then able to continue walking unhindered by any insects at all.
However the orange shirt that was then folded and in my hand as I walked along, continued to be covered and attracting a lot of insects!
My partner incidentally, never had any insects attracted to the pink coloured top!
So Orange, definitely a colour to avoid wearing on a countryside walk!
White light attracts the most. Actually, most insects are drawn towards Ultra Violet light, but since you never really see people with UV light on their front porch, white is the next in line. Moths can't see yellow or red nearly as well as any other color, so if you're trying to avoid the most amount of insects as possible during a family event, a yellow light is your best bet.
They don't see colors the way we do. Bright colors are known to attract some insects & there are some colors they cannot see. Professionals take advantage of all factors-including this. Flies & many flying insects like yellow, so many products for them are. Many insects do not see red or light in the red spectrum, which is why bees usually don't go for red flowers & cockroach baits have a red see through cover many times-so you don't startle them with a flashlight.
Bugs are most attracted to bright colours, especially bees, that is why flowers are usually bright colours.
Bees are indeed attracted to yellow, blue, and white objects. They also
are attracted to colors in the ultraviolet range that we cannot see.
