Try to pull out colors from any furniture in the room such as your couch or chairs. If you dont have furniture yet then try a brown or a dark green. You want something darker than the walls though or they will stand out too much.

In a kitchen - cupboards etc in mustard - white, pale green, taupe, beige, or in a VERY small, bright room, try black.
In a living room - with furniture and/or window coverings in mustard - white, medium green, tan, (warm) browns, or a wallpaper in a toile (black and white or one with deep yellow in it).
In a bedroom - linens and window coverings in mustard-
Feminine- a toile wallpaper (black and white or one with dark yellow in it). Use lots of lace, and white linens to make this work.
Non-gender use a medium (or dark if you are adventurous) blue with lots of white trim and accessories.
Masculine- a warm brown faux leather feature wall with or without wainscoting on the remaining walls (same faux finish below the chair rail) and a warm cream colour on the remaining walls (or above the rail). Or try one of the medium to dark greens with lots of wood and leather accessories.
General (safe) - use a dark cream, a light or medium green, or tan.
