Answer
The rings on the Olympic flag symbolize the five continents. The reason being is because at least one of these colours can be found in the flag of every nation. It is not certain that this was the designers intent. This flag was presented by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1914 at the olympic congress. Hope this helped.

Answer
There's a slight confusion here...the colours are meant to represent the flags of the nations. Every flag has at least one of the colours on the Olympic flag (and many have 2 or 3). The order of the rings supposedly correspond with the flags at the time the emblem was conceived, stating that each nation had a colour corresponding to its continent.
The rings represent 5 of the worlds continents FROM WHICH ATHELETES CAME. There is debate as to how many continents there actually are (4-7) but the rings represent: Americas, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia. Antarctica has a population of zero, hence no athletes. The white of the flag represents all bodies of land outside the major bodies.
Some people theorise that the colours don't necessarily represent the continents, but according to the flag maker himself and the official olympic website, this is simply not true.
