What colour is copper oxide?

Answer:
There are two copper oxides, differing in color:
  • if it is black powder, then it is copper(II) oxide CuO (cupric, more common, as in the mineral 'tenoriet')
  • if it is red powder, then it is copper(I) oxide Cu2O (cuprous oxide, as in mineral the 'cupriet' and it occurs in 'Benedict's test' on reducing sugars)
