In USA, Canada and other countries which run a 60 Hz electrical power network, the color of the insulation of the ground or earth wire is plain green, or plain bare copper wire can be used.

In countries in Europe and elsewhere, which run a 50 Hz electrical power network, the color of the insulation of the earth or ground wire is yellow/green.

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB

SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY

REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

It depends on what colors you have and what system you are working with. If you have black white and green, the green is ground, white is neutral, and black is hot.

Why do you need an earth wire in a plug?

The Earth wire is there to earth electrical devices that are not double insulated. If there was to be a malfunction in the appliance then you can get a really bad shock if an earth wire is not present. If there is any free electricity roming around then the earth wire will send it down to earth and to the main power station closest to the area instead of through your body. s aged 15

What is a function of earth wire?

The earth wire connects the metal frame of the electrical appliances to the ground. The convention is to have green colour for earth wires. The purpose of earthing is that in case of an insulation failure in some appliance, this wire connected to the metal body will provide a path for the current to flow on the ground. In absence of earth wire, this fault current would have flown through the body of the operator, causing electrical shock.

What is the earth wire for in a plug?

In the USA we call it the ground. If there is a cross in the wires from hot to common the ground or earth wire will give the electricity an easier path to the ground instead of going through a live person. The earth is attached in the main box to a copper rod hammered into the ground. This makes it easier for electricity to get to the ground.

Why would copper wire be unsuitable for use of flame tests?

Copper wire would not be suitable for use in fame tests due to the fact it would cause the flame to change colour (usually to green). The experimenter wants to observe the colour change produced by the sample, not the wire.

Which side of an extension cord is hot how can you tell the difference?

If you are constructing an extension cord make sure that the ends go on the right end of the cable. Match the wire end when looking at it, to the proper pin configuration of the plug. A non locking plug will be a 6-30P or a locking plug will be a L6-30P. On a 6-30P plug, black wire to the left blade (brass in colour), white wire to the Y terminal (silver in colour) and the green wire to the G terminal (green in colour). On a L6-30P plug, black wire to the X terminal, white wire to the Y terminal and the ground wire to the G terminal.Looking at the end of the cable it should be matched to this configuration. If it doesn't look at the other end of the cable. No wires should cross when connecting to the blades on the plug, if they do you have the wrong end of the cable.
