What comparisons or similarities might be drawn between American settlers' desire to be independent from Britain and UK's desire to be independent from the European Union EU?

In my opinion, it would be comparing Apples to a Rock. Great Britain leaving the EU had nothing to do with oppression by a ruling King over a colony. GB is a country that is still part of an alliance/treaty that is called the European Union. The colony that became the United States was being oppressed by a King and was using the fledgeling colony as a money maker for England. This caused a revolt against the crown and eventually formed the United States. GB is not revolting against the EU. They took a NON-BINDING popular vote to see if the general public wanted to stay or leave the EU. It is now up to GB's parliament on what to do next.
From news reports, the rest of the EU now wants GB out sooner than later. Does the EU have in their charter to kick out members? GB will take their time in figuring out the mess they are in now. The big question is will GB really leave? or will the EU kick them out?
