Proton(s),

Neutron(s),

Electron(s).

* Related Information:

The main three particles that make up the atom are, in the nucleus, positively charged protons and neutral neutrons and, in the various electron shells surrounding the nucleus, negatively charged electrons. The number of protons determines the atomic number of the atom and its properties. The number of neutrons can vary for any given atomic number, providing isotopes of the element. Electrons can be gained or lost to form negative or positive ions. Protons, neutrons, and electrons are the basic components. If you need to be more in detail, there are things called quarks that make up those components.

The modern atom is known to have three main components located in two regions.

- At the center of the atom is the nucleus, which consists of:
> protons: positively charged particles
> neutrons: neutrally charged particles

It is assumed that the neutrons are needed to hold the protons together in the nucleus. The force holding these particles together is known as the 'nuclear binding force', known to be one of the strongest forces in nature.

- The other region is the one which surrounds the nucleus and is called an electron cloud. It consists of:
> electrons: negatively charged particles

The electrons are present in different energy levels around the nucleus in so-called electron shells. Each shell can only contain a limited number of electrons
