After World War Two, European industry and farming were destroyed as a result of the war. In America, there had been no fighting so industry and farming remained intact. The US economy prospered by providing the needs of the war torn Europe. Also, the US defense industry continued to grow based on a perceived threat from the Soviet Union. Stalin would not withdraw from various Eastern European nations. In addition, Stalin's ideology concerning the spread of communism did not seem to change. With this said, both the USSR and the USA, used their defense industries to build weapons. It was more difficult for the Soviets however, as they too had lost their farming and much of their industrial base due to the war.
