A reason for low body temperature can be an underactive thyroid.
While we cite 98.6F as "normal" body temperature (taken orally), the truth is that normal body temperature varies from one healthy person to another, and temperatures as low as 98.0F are not uncommon. The second most common cause is reduced surface temperature resulting in hypothermia -- the patient has recently been exposed to a cold environment. At rest, an uninsulated patient in temperatures as high as 60F (roughly) in air may show reduced body temperature.
