(1) The drive belt may be loose or broken, or missing because it broke. (2) The pulley on the tines may have come loose or broken off the shaft. Or (3)... It's a 2 stage and the driveshaft that comes foreward from the auger into the worm gear casing that spins the tines has broken somewhere... either the shaft snapped, the case broke, bushing disintegrated, or gear chipped teeth.

∙ 15y agomy snow blower starts up but the blades will not turn.... help most common problem is the two shear pins that go through the auger (blades) and shaft its on broke. these are made to brake so if you hit a rock or some loose ice, they will brake instead of something more expensive. make sure you replace them with replacement shear pins & not regular bolts, shear pins cost around $5 for set, rebuilding your front gear housing can cost a few hundred! if the shear pins are intact its probably a belt or the gear housing.

∙ 12y agolikely have a broken or out of adjustment belt, should be a cover just forward of the engine, take it off check for a broken belt, or with the engine off, engage the auger lever and check if the belt gets tight on the pulleys. If you can spin the belt by hand with the auger lever engaged you should be able to adjust the tensioner pulley or if its adjusted all the way, you have to replace the belt.

∙ 13y agoBelt is a good place to start, shear pins, cables to lose, snow is to wet sticking in chute (spray the inside of the blower with Pam or a none stick spray) or your gear box could be jammed.

why wont the blades/auger on my john deere snow blower turn? first thing i would check is to make sure there isn't a piece of wood or something jammed between the blades and housing. i don't know if your blower is shaft or belt driven. if belt driven check the belt and pulleys. if it is shaft driven try to spin the blades by hand, if they turn free then the shear pin is broke. look for a small round steel pin in the same are the blower shaft attaches. it should go through the shaft all the way from side to side.
