You can get horses for people of different abilities, e.g: Beginner, Lead-rein, Novice, Experienced. But you will have to know how to look after the pony, unless you loan the pony or out it on full livery :)

Well, obviously this is quite a hard question to answer without knowing your ability etc. But I would suggest possibly a cob, type horse as they are very reliable and caring, and they will learn as you develop as a rider. Although really the breed of the horse/pony (depending how tall you are) doesn't matter, as you get good and bad horses. You would really have to research, before buying a horse. Also as you have no riding experience how could you exercise your horse properly, I think you should maybe consider having riding lessons before going in at the deep end and owning your own horse.
