Kris Kringle, or Santa Claus, is a fictional character believed to bring presents to the children of the world on Christmas Eve. The figure originated in Finland, although it is not known how exactly the stories started.
The figure of Santa Claus first begins to show up among the Pennsylvania Dutch in the mid 1820s in the form of Kris Kringle, or as he was also known, Belsnickle. Belsnickle is a derivative of the German "Pelz-nickle", which means "Nicholas in Furs ". Belsnickle would travel the Pennsylvania countryside ringing his bell looking for good children to give out his small gifts of cakes and nuts to. If Belsnickle came across a child who had not been behaving in the past year, he would warn the child to be good or else he might give them a smack with his rod.
Kris Kringle also has origins in The Christkind or Christkindl, the traditional Christmas gift-bringer in regions of Austria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, parts of Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Switzerland, Slovakia, Hungary, France, Upper-Silesia in Poland, parts of Hispanic America, in certain areas of southern Brazil and in the Acadiana region of Louisiana.
According tolegend, St. Nicholas was born in the city of Patara, and traveled to Palestine and Egypt when he was young.
