In most cases a minimum of an undergraduate degree in a suitable subject is required, and to work in field Archaeology practical experience is preferred. The degree in which you need for a career in archaeology depends on what part of the world you are studying in. In the United States archaeology lies in one of the four branches of Anthropology as applied by Franz Boas, thus you would typically get an anthropology degree with a concentration in archaeology. In the UK on the other hand there are specific archaeology degrees with numerous specializations (i.e. historical, biblical, Egyptology, etc.) offered at various Universities.

You will require a Ph.D. to do funded research or teach. It is often useful to gain work experience in the field you wish to pursue (be it field work or lab work) by helping an archaeologist, though you may not be able to do this until you are already an archaeology student.

To be an archaeologist, first and foremost you must have a passion for the past. Anthropology is the larger discipline of studying human behavior and interaction generally using ethnographic methods. Archaeologists however, though they at times will interview modern people from the society they are studying, generally have to get down and dirty to find their answers. A good archaeologist must have strong analytical thinking skills and the ability to make connections between large quantities of data. Though math skills are generally loathed by most social scientists, basic knowledge of statistics and measurement is key. For instance, if you can't understand percentages of carbon in the atmosphere which will affect radiocarbon dates then your findings will be inaccurate. To sum it up, here are the skills you need: 1) An analytical mind 2) Organization and record keeping abilities! 3) A love of the past 4) A strong back! Though field work at most takes up 3 months out of the year, if you don't have a PhD you'll be doing the grunt work of digging and carrying. 5) Good communication and presentation skills 6) The ability to write effectively and use jargon

If you are interested in a career in Archeology, you should consider starting with a bachelor's degree in archeology or anthropology. You can choose to study ancient or classical civilizations by enrolling for interdisciplinary programs that include courses in art, architecture, history, classics, theology and ancient and modern languages. You can also study historical periods, a line of study that involves combining history with courses in vernacular and historical architecture, material folklore and culture and archaeology.

Most undergraduate courses are interdisciplinary, and students also learn ancient and modern languages such as Latin, Greek, French and German. A student also needs to take part in a field archaeological school and to learn how to perform basic laboratory studies. Archaeological field schools are mostly held during the summer and teach students how to properly record and excavate archaeological sites.

What is the Occupational Outlook for an Archeologist?

Archeologists do not just work outdoors among the elements. They also work as educators, researchers, administrators, and consultants in other settings such as museums, government agencies, consulting firms, educational institutions, private and public foundations, and consulting firms. They conduct field investigations, teach, analyze sites and artifacts, and publish research results. Many archaeologists work for the federal government for bodies such as the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Others work for state government agencies, seeing that each state has a Historic Preservation Office with archaeologists on staff. Archaeologists may work in state parks departments, highway departments, and water resource departments. Some cities also hire archaeologists to deal with local ordinances protecting archaeological sites.

If you can't take a specialist archaeology course, then history would seem a sensible choice, but try to find one that is biased towards the times you are interested in. To prepare for application, make sure you study all your school subjects, and pay special attention to your English as this is the medium you will use to make your impression.

An archaeologist falls under the category of a social scientist. Therefore, the following is written by and according to the U.S. Department of Labor and particular to the education and training required for a social scientist.

The educational attainment of social scientists is among the highest of all occupations, with most positions requiring a master's or Ph.D. degree.

Education and training. Graduates with master's degrees in applied specialties usually are qualified for positions outside of colleges and universities, although requirements vary by field. A Ph.D. degree may be required for higher-level positions. Bachelor's degree holders have limited opportunities and do not qualify for most of the occupations discussed above. A bachelor's degree does, however, provide a suitable background for many different kinds of entry-level jobs in related occupations, such as research assistant, writer, management trainee, or market analyst.

Training in statistics and mathematics is essential for many social scientists Geographers, political scientists, and those in other fields increasingly use mathematical and quantitative research methods. The ability to use computers for research purposes is mandatory in most disciplines. Social scientists also must keep up-to date on the latest technological advances that affect their discipline and research. For example, most geographers use GIS technology extensively, and GIS is also becoming more commonly used by archaeologists, sociologists, and other workers.

Many social science students also benefit from internships or field experience. Numerous local museums, historical societies, government agencies, non-profit and other organizations offer internships or volunteer research opportunities. Archaeological field schools instruct future anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians in how to excavate, record, and interpret historical sites.

Other qualifications. Social scientists need excellent written and oral communication skills to report research findings and to collaborate on research. Successful social scientists also need intellectual curiosity and creativity because they constantly seek new information about people, things, and ideas. The ability to think logically and methodically is also essential to analyze complicated issues, such as the relative merits of various forms of government. Objectivity, an open mind, and systematic work habits are important in all kinds of social science research. Perseverance, too, is often necessary, as when an anthropologist spends years studying artifacts from an ancient civilization before making a final analysis and interpretation.

Advancement. Some social scientists advance to top-level research and administrative positions. Advancement often depends on the number and quality of reports that social scientists publish or their ability to design studies.

Many social scientists choose to teach in their field, often while pursuing their own research. These workers are usually classified as postsecondary teachers. The minimum requirement for most positions in colleges and universities is a Ph.D. degree. Graduates with a master's degree in a social science may qualify for teaching positions in community colleges. Social science graduates with sufficient education courses can qualify for teaching positions in secondary and elementary schools.
