some people believed that the can part of the name came from the Latin word canis which means dog. The reason for this is that the discoverer found numerous amounts of wild dogs. ---The ary part of canary I haven't found yet but I will say when I have found it.---

Most probably from the Latin Insula Canaria, Island of Dogs. The dogs were probably seals.

The Canary Islands comes from the Latin term Insula Canaria, meaning 'Island of the Dogs'.It is thought that those dogs were the now extinct Monk Seal, whose name is Sea Dog in Latin.

The name Islas Canarias is probably derived from the Latin term Insula Canaria, which means "Island of the Dogs", a name applied originally only to Gran Canaria.

It is speculated that the so called "dogs" were actually a species of Monk Seals ("sea dog" in Latin).
It seems like an obvious question, but it's NOT the canary. They're named after dogs, from the Latin root that gives us "canine."

== == The islands' name is likely derived from the Latin term Insula Canaria, meaning Island of the Dogs, a name applied originally only to the island of Gran Canaria. It is thought that the dense population of an endemic breed of large and fierce dogs, like the Presa Canario, was the characteristic that most struck the few ancient Romans who established contact with the islands by the sea.

The Canary Islands were named after the dogs ( Latin: Canis) that were present on the islands when the first Europeans from Spain arrived.

The islands were also the home of small greenish birds. When tamed and brought back to Europe they were called Canaria, and hence our word Canary.

So the islands were named for an animal, and the bird was named for the islands.

The Canary Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean and are named after the indigenous dogs of the island.

Dogs. Canine. Canariensis.

Allegedly, there are still wild dogs to this day there.
I quote directly from the Wikipedia article on the Islands... "The name Islas Canarias is likely derived from the Latin term Insula Canaria, meaning "Island of the Dogs", a name applied originally only to Gran Canaria."

The Canary Islands are a Spanish autonomous community (an independent territory of Spain) located in the North Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of the African continent (west of the Morocco - Western Sahara border).

There is a myth that the Canary Islands were named after a dog is a common one, but not accurate. The islands were actually named for a species of Monk Seals called Canis Marinus in Latin, literally sea dog, the common name for seals during the Roman Empire. The islands were once densely populated with the species, which today are critically endangered and no longer inhabit the islands.

The premis is wrong, the Canary Islands are in the Atlantic, not the Pacific.

The Canary Islands formed, like most other islands, by a submarine volcanic origin. The initial start of this volcanic process started in the Miocene Age, about 25 million years ago.
