The symbol at the centre of the flag is inspired by a legend. The legend dates to 1327 when the Aztec's god said to build their city where they found an eagle eating a serpent sitting on a prickly pear cactus. The city now is Mexico City. The city was called Tenochtitlan. The eagle eating the serpent was a symbol of a religious belief of triumph. Green represents independence from Spain, White for the purity of the catholic faith, red for the union of Europe and America. In the 1800's President Juarez changed the meaning of the colours. Green meaning hope, White for unity, Red to represent the blood of the country's heroes.
