Hazrat Imam Husain a.s. was the grand son of Prophet Mohammad he and his family and followers were defending Islam which was in danger in the hands of Yazid the King of Shyam ( Syria ) Imam Husain a.s. was brought from Madina and kept captive untill he was murdered brutally by the Army of Yazid on 10th of Muharram. Shias and the Lovers of Ahlul Bait ( house hold ) of Mohammad s.a.w. So this is not a festival but a commemoration of Aashura ( 10th Day of Muharram ).
