A degree in journalism, communications, media or film will help. While earning your degree you can also work in local television which will give you experience, connections, and help pay the bills. Film and television are very related to each other

There are several ways to becoming a director, the first being a 4-year degree in film making. But there are other ways depending on what you want to achieve.

While not all film producers or directors have earned degrees, but they have some sort of formal training, to understand the technical aspects of film making, equipment use or to make certain adjustments in angle or lighting to transform the image.

Quentin Tarantino was a high-school dropout and never spent a day in film school. Go to school and get accepted into the Hollywood Screen Director's Guild. That is the usual way to become a major film director. Normally a degree in film is how most do it, but there are other ways depending on how high your aspirations are. Formal training through a university or acting conservatory is typical; however, many actors, producers, and directors find work on the basis of their experience and talent alone.

The Directors Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers jointly sponsor the Assistant Directors Training Program. To be accepted to this highly competitive program, an individual must have either a bachelor's or associates degree or 2 years of experience and must complete a written exam and other assessments. Program graduates are eligible to become a member of the Directors Guild and typically find employment as a second assistant director. (from Department of Labor website)

Some top film schools can be found at New York University, the University of Southern California, the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, California Institute of the Arts and the University of California at Los Angeles. Other possible ways to gain experience: 1) Apply for work on movie sets, in entry-level jobs such as production assistant or as anyone's assistant.

2) Wherever you earn your degree you can also work in local television which will give you experience, connections, and help pay the bills. Film and television are related to each other.

ANSWER: Any of these will do, without any one or more of these it is impossible.

1. A large following (100,000+ people should do, tila tequila could have been a director[not a good one, but she would have found a financier])

2. A LOT of Money. (The only reason M. Night Shyamalan was given a start is because his family gave him a large amount of money to make his first film) Other then that you can raise the money yourself or find someone who can. (The COEN Brothers made their first movie by collecting money from Dentists around their area).

3.Show a great deal of talent. (That's what Film Festivals used to be for, but now with the internet anyone can show of their abilities, but it is a loosing battle if you doing do better than your competition -- which is now the world against you).

4. Know the right people. (Networking goes without saying. The days where anyone could just walk into a movie studio and pitch a script are long gone [1940's-mid 1950's])

5. A lot of Luck. (Not only do you have to be in the top 5 of luckiest people in the world, but just being in the right time at the right place is still one of the most successful paths towards becoming a director. James Cameron for instance, got his start when a movie producer noticed him on set. "Of course the story is; the director couldn't get worms to move more for the camera, so little James said, why don't we just electrocute them? So, the produce went up to him and said; If you can get worms to act for the camera, then I am sure you will do fine with Actors." - - there is a little more to his success, but it just goes to show.)

There are no formal education requirements for directing on stage, in films, or on television. Some directors do have a BA, MA, or MFA, depending on their areas of interest. For the stage, a person might get their degree in drama, technical theatre, directing, musical theatre, etc. For film and television they might study cinematography, filmmaking, or film direction. The degree doesn't guarantee getting a job, and the lack of one won't hurt. The real advantage of the formal education is the combination of experience and connections. It's often not what you know, but whom you know.

You do not need a degree to become an actor or actress. You don't even have to study or train for it all you have to be able to do is act. It is important to get experience on stage as even if you go into TV or film acting it gives you confidence and an incentive to learn lines.
