The length of the day is 24 hours, this is determined by the amount of time it takes the earth to spin on it's axis one time (23 hrs 56 mins 4.1 secs) .

The length of a year is approx 365 days. This is close to the amount of time it takes the earth to revolve around the sun (takes 365 1/4 days to rotate around)

How long it takes for the sun to rotate itself once as it revolves around the sun; a day is actually 23 hours and 58 (I believe, it could be 57) minutes long so that's why we have 366 days in Leap Years.
