He actually was a physicist/professor @ Ursinus College where he worked on a designing a digital computation machine. While at the University of Pennsylvania (Moore School of Electrical Engineering) he met Eckert and they worked together to design ENIAC (the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) for the U.S. Army. They soon after designed the EDVAC (a version of the ENIAC with an internal digital memory system). John has received numerous awards for his achievements and help furthering the electronic/computing world. He died in January 08, 1980.
