A Fletcher was the man who made the arrows - more specifically he cut and fitted the feathers, called the "flight", to the rear end of the arrows. The words "fletcher" and "flight" are closely related.
To see what a flight does, take an ordinary sewing needle and throw it at a cushion - it doesn't stick in, right?
Now place a few inches of thread in the eye of the needle and try again - that's what the flight does, it stabilizes the projectile.
The soldier who fired the bow was a bowman and the person who made the bows was a bowyer.
