During his inauguration speech, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked the people of the nation to support the leadership in these critical days. He attempted to calm the fears of the public by placing the blame on the "rulers of the exchange of mankind's goods" and said that the primary task was to put people to work.

The day after his inauguration, President Franklin D. Roosevelt convened Congress in a special session and got them to declare a four day bank holiday. By March 9th, he was able to sign the Emergency Banking Act which allowed the Federal Reserve Banks to issue currency on good assets which allowed the banks to reopen. This was the beginning of the New Deal; programs for Relief, Recovery, and Reform following the Great Depression.
