Gordon McKay (1821 - 1903) was a Harvard donor, industrialist, and entrepreneur. McKay developed and manufactured a shoe sewing machine, then made his fortune by leasing the machines to shoe manufacturers, earning a royalty from each pair of shoes made. Even though McKay never graduated from school, he left most of his fortune to Harvard to be used to promote applied science.
