AnswerJesus could not have been using the word 'hypocrite' as we understand it, because it comes from the Greek word for a pretender or actor. There is no equivalent in Hebrew or Aramaic.

However the gospels were written in Greek and do depict Jesus calling his opponents hypocrites. Some examples from Mattheware:

Matthew 6:2: "Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men."

Matthew 6:5: "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men."

Matthew 6:16: "Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance ..."

Matthew 7:5: "Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. "

In each case, except possibly the last, the word can have no other meaning than that given by the Greek, and therefore was introduced by the evangelists, not Jesus.

God does not like hypocrisy. Jesus called the Sadducee's and Pharisees, hypocrites for obeying the letter of the law so closely to circumvent the spirit of the law. In other words they would nit pick about (for example) ceremonies, rites and rituals according to the law that they did not obey why God wanted them to obey the Law. A good example here is when Jesus healed a whithered hand on a Sabbath, They said it was against the law to work on a Sabbath. Jesus responded if you found an ox in a ditch on a Sabbath that you would help it so it would not die. So much more that you should help a man in need.

I am not aware of it saying that God hates them anywhere. There are many verses discussing his disapproval though. See the related link below for a list of them.

Why are Christians hypocrites?

Yes, many, and infact most people who claim to be "Christians" are hypocrites. Some people just say they are, but are really not. So it may seem that all Christians are hypocrites but some really do follow the rules. Believe me, no one is going to be perfect and sinless because the bible says "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" but that is why there are so many hypocrite Christians.
