Canada's first prime minister, John A. Macdonald, was a chronic alcoholic.

On many occasions, Macdonald's Alcoholism interfered with the affairs of state. Often, when a crisis arose, Macdonald would go off on a drinking bender and be incapable of giving coherent directions, let alone competent leadership. Many times no one, not even his wife, knew where he was. As a result of Macdonald's drinking, parliament was often paralysed.

Macdonald also became a very rich man through kickbacks, insider trading, and illicit campaign donations. Canadian taxpayers are still paying for Macdonald's involvement in the Grand Trunk Railway.
