JFK did not really have a career before he entered politics. He went to college, served in the navy during WW II and worked briefly as a magazine writer. He was immediately successful at running for office and served as a US Congressman and US Senator fro Massachusetts before the was elected President.

Before he became a US President, John F. Kennedy was the US Senator from Massachusetts from January 3, 1953 to December 22, 1960. Prior to the Senate, Kennedy was the Member of the US House of Representative from Massachusetts, 11th district from January 3, 1947 to January 3, 1953. Kennedy also served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy from 1941 to 1945; he was awarded many medals including a Purple Heart for being wounded in action.
