The author of Mark's Gospel, now generally believed by scholars not to be John Mark, does seem to have believed that Jesus would return on clouds of glory within the lifetimes of some of those who lived in the time of Jesus. Mark introduces this expectation in verse 9:1, with a fuller account in chapter 13:
Mark 9:1: "And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power."
Mark chapter 13 begins by describing the events of the First Roman-Jewish War and the Jerusalem civil war of 70 CE, then says that this will be followed by the return of the Son of man: (Mark 13:24-26) "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. "
Of course, this prophecy did not come to pass, but at the time of writing (about 70 CE), it certainly seemed as if the end was nigh. By the 80s of the first century, when Matthew's Gospel was written, the return predicted in Mark's Gospel was becoming unlikely - the generation had already passed - and the author of Matthew realised that Mark's prophecy had to be corrected. While copying as faithfully as possible from Mark, he changed the emphasis away from an impending end of the world and changed the position of the sentence about "this generation", relative to the destruction of the great buildings, so that it referred to something else altogether. He added, and emphasised, material where Jesus told the disciples that the end is not yet, and that no man knows when the end of the world will occur.

The gospel now known as the Gospel According to Mark was attributed to Mark later in the second century, although it was originally written anonymously. In spite of this attribution, there is no good reason to believe that John Mark was actually the author of this gospel.

OpinionNo. I do not believe that Jesus was more than a man. Moreover there have been so many failed prophecies of his return, beginning with Mark's Gospel, that it is hard to give credence to any further expectations of a second coming.
The Gospel of Mark is located in the New Testament. It is the second Gospel; in order they go Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Because it is not yet time for His Second Coming. The final prophecies must happen first, and then His Second Coming will happen in the clouds. Jesus will not come back to earth as He did the first time. Everyone on earth will witness His Second Coming in the clouds with great power and glory. (Mark 13:26). First there has to be a great war, then the Antichrist has to come to make a false peace. Then the Antichrist will rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem and procliam himself as the Christ, for the first three-and-a-half years of his reign. Then for the next three-and-a-half years, he will reveal his true self and wage war against all those who did not accept his mark. Then the Second Coming of Christ will happen in the clouds and Christ will destroy the beast and all those who received his mark on their right hand or forehead. Jesus' Second Coming will not happen until these final biblical prophecies have been fulfilled.
OpinionWe now know that Mark was the first New Testament gospel to be written, and scholars say that it was written around 70 CE, some forty years after the traditional date for the crucifixion. Since Mark gives scant mention to John the Baptist, the question seems to be why Mark mentions John at all. Some believe that John the Baptist was one of the earliest Gnostic preachers. Whatever he taught was highly popular, and he even rated a mention in the writings of the first-century Jewish historian, Josephus, who tells us that he was executed by Herod Antipas approximately 35 CE. Mark's Gospel, on the other hand, seems to represent the 'centrist' branch of Christianity, which could have actually been a rival to that taught by John the Baptist. If in fact, there were two rival Christian factions represented by John the Baptist and Mark, it is possible that the author of Mark, writing long after John's death, would have wanted to attract John's former followers into his branch of Christianity. The way to do this would not be to criticise or attack John, but to write that he had only been heralding the coming of Jesus, whose very shoes John was not fit to untie.
