He proved that a "killed" virus could be successfully used as a vaccine. Other scientists at the time still believed that only a "live" virus injection would give a person immunity. However, using the "live" virus was, according to Salk, more dangerous, and this fact was proven when Dr. Sabin developed the "live" vaccine, the testing of which caused many deaths. Today, vaccines are produced using his "killed" virus methods.

I am unsure what Jonas Salk did, but Gregor Mendal was the first person to actually study the heritablity of traits. He did this studying pea plants for several decades.
