Lawrence Hargrave (1850-1950) was a famous aviation pioneer. He is famous for inventing the box kite, the rotary engine -which was the most common engine in aeroplanes since 1920, and the study of aerofoils -(the curved surfaces of the aeroplanes used to create lift).

Lawrence Hargrave was the Australian inventor of the box kite. He used this invention (from 1893) to experiment further with aerodynamics. He was the first to build and successfully test a flying machine, which he did by linking together four of his kites and adding a sling seat. He managed to fly about five metres in the air.
