Most of their food came from hunting along the way, but the rock salt would help preserve it. Stops at forts and visits to Native Americans would provide them with non-meats.However, at one point there was a shortage of food and members of the expedition were forced to eat leather to avoid starvation. Thankfully, no one starved and the expedition was able to pull through.
