What did Louis Riel do?In: Canadian History |
He was convicted of treason and was executed in 1885.
A bit more detail about Riel. He was a religious fanatic who was probably mentally ill ( he heard voices and thought he was a new Jesus ) who didn't found anything. He DID try to start up a republic, calling it Assinaboya , after the Assinaboine river. He made a secret deal with the Americans for money, guns and ammunition, and in return he would "hand over the new republic " tho the Americans, and be the puppet leader of the new territory.
His first attempt in 1870 was a abject failure, and he fled to the USA, to Minnesota, where he woked as a Catholic school teacer and received a US Government pension to live on.
In 1885, he tried it again and this time people died, and he was tried and hung as a traitor. Riel was not a hero.
If he had stayed away from guns and revolution , and taken a purely political approach he may have been more successful.
