In 1920 Gandhi became the leader for the Indian movement for Indian independence.

In 1930 Gandhi led a 241 mile march opposing the British tax that was going to be put on salt. During his march he cleased salt from the ocean, demonstrating that it would be a better solution for India than taxed salt.

In 1948 He held a fast to stop bloodshed which was successful. It ended in five days.

His policy of non-violence won him many accolades and he is honored by historians as one of the most influential persons of recent history. In his lifetime he achieved the status of 'Mahatma' (supreme being). Even first prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru called Gandhi 'Bapu' (father) which speaks volumes of his position and reverence showed towards him by the entire nation.
