Michelangelo Buonarrotti (1475-1564) was a sculptor and painter, and designed architectural facades.

Michelangelo is best known for his creation of the paintings that adorn the ceiling and altar walls of the Sistine Chapel - the ceiling being a scene from Genesis and the Altar walls mural representing The Last Judgment. He also sculpted several famous statues including "David" and "The Pietà" (the latter currently located in Vatican City).

Michelangelo accomplished so much in his lifetime. His most famous works are probably the David, the Pieta (which I have seen people cry at the sight of--it is so beautiful and moving), and the paintings on the Sistine Chapel's ceiling and the Last Judgment. He was a sculptor at heart, but was commissioned to paint the Sistine Chapel, which he did reluctantly. For further information, research any of these things, and you will get so much information.

His first work was Madonna of the Steps, then the Battle of the Centaurs.
