He was an ardent believer in westward expansion, favored the annexation of Texas, but was opposed to war as a matter of principal. Benton was a man of constant contradiction, he was a slave owner who opposed slavery, a pro union southerner and a strong backer of the Oregon Territory who stood in opposition to the 54 forty or fight faction.
