Six plastic owls.
The black tiles are heat shields which help protect the shuttle from burning in the atmosphere. Shuttle comes glides down on it's belly so the shields are only covering the bottom.
The spacecraft has a heat shield of tiles, each costing 3000 dollars. to protect it.
The first shuttle to explode during a mission was the space shuttle Challenger back in 1986. It exploded 73 seconds after launch, killing all 7 people aboard. Space ShuttleEndeavour was built to replace Challenger. The most recent shuttle disaster was in 2003 with space shuttle Columbia. The shuttles heat tiles were damaged during launch. The damaged tiles were not able to protect the shuttle effectively and exploded killing all 7 astronauts aboard.
A piece of foam scraped a heat shield plate on the launch and damaged it so it would not protect any more.
There were 5. Space Shuttle Columbia (destroyed in 2003), Space Shuttle Challenger (destroyed in 1886), Space Shuttle Discovery, Space Shuttle Atlantis, and Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Woodpeckers are a problem for much the same reason as anything that would puncture a hole into the shuttle or its fuel tanks. In 1995, the shuttle 'Discovery' was rolled back to the Vehicle Assembly Building only a week before launch because woodpeckers had drilled dozens of holes in the insulating foam of the external fuel tank. A hole in that tank would be explosive, and the effect would be similar to what happened in the Challenger explosion, where a chain of other events led to the puncture of the tank. When the shuttle Columbia was torn apart during reentry, the tiles on a crucial part of the orbiter had been damaged, allowing heat to enter and damage the frame of the shuttle's wing. So, a single bird could completely destroy a shuttle and its crew by drilling into the shuttle or its tanks just as a single piece of falling foam has already done.

One can find a Lego Space Shuttle to purchase on Amazon or eBay. Other places to check are your local Walmart, Toys "R" Us, and Kmart stores. A local Legoland may also carry Lego Space Shuttles to buy.
The space shuttle is basically like a modern airliner. The tiles that cover the skin are fairly brittle but offer a very small layer of protection. Basically, if the shuttle was hit by a meteorite of any real size it would likely destroy the aircraft. The odds of a substantial strike during orbit are very very slim.

The black tiles underneath the space shuttle are made of ceramics. Ceramics are already fired and thus able to withstand very high temperatures. The ceramic tiles do oxidize (which means material is lost) and are replaced between missions. The failure on Columbia was due to some of those ceramic tiles having fallen off during take off.
