Bill Gates did not invent anything really.. Gary Kildall did, he invented the operating system which for the most part is still used in computers today... he also did not invent the computer chip... he did create windows 98, 99, ME, 2000, XP etc.. as the person said below.

^^thank you. finally someone with knowledge. gates only marketed the invention of Gary Kildall. This is the same with Steve Jobs. People believe that he was the main person in the invention of the Personal Computer, but he was not. Steve Wozniak was. Jobs, just like Gates, marketed another person's idea for money.

The microprocessor had been invented by Intel. The two people above have no idea what they are talking about. If you are looking for the answer to this question, i suggest you visit your local library and search for the official biography on Bill Gates.

Bill Gates created MITS Altair 8800 compatible BASIC language compiler. (BASIC was already there, but not compatible with the MITS's new Altair)

After that Microsoft was in the "compilers" business. It used to create compilers of different languages for the different personal computers. (at that time there was no concept like personal computers. They were known as either micro-coprocessor based computers or home computers). Every hardware needed differently coded programs. As there was no operating system for microcomputers at that time.

When Gary Kildall of Digital Research Inc. came up with CP/M (the first ever OS for micro-computers) for 8 bit pprocessors, it was a huge success. Later almost all the manufacturers of computer kits (something similar to assembled PCs of today) wanted CP/M to run on their hardware. So Gary came up with the concept of a ROM by the name BIOS (fools call it CMOS now a days), which we still use in the PCs.

When intel released first 16 bit processor, Gary was a little slow to release the 16 bit CP/M as he was very busy with other work. Tim Patterson of Seattle Computer Products, while desperately waiting for 16 bit CP/M, made some changes in 8 bit CP/M and called it 86-DOS. At that time Microsoft was still in the "compilers" business, and Bill Gates did the work of coding.

Later IBM tried to get CP/M 86 (16 bit), but it didn't work out. Seeing an opportunity and huge business that CP/M had did previously and bright future in the operating systems, Microsoft purchased all the rights of 86-DOS from SCP, made few changes and gave it to IBM as MS/DOS. IBM found and corrected more than 300 bugs, and renamed it as PC-DOS. Rest is the history.

Since then Bill Gates did the business, not the coding.

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are very much same. Gates tool credit for Gary's work, and Jobs took it for Steve Wozniak's work. Bill Gates, even though for a little while did coding. Jobs never did anything except business.
