They, with the 82nd Airborne Division, landed behind the invasion beaches, captured and held important bridges, road crossings and towns. The British Oxfordshire and Buckinghams, (Ox & Bucks) took the important bridge in the north sector, Pegasus Bridge. They were glider troops.

Hi, everyone! I want to make a lttle min-series about a soldier in Normandy with Company D. Problem is, I can't find any detailed information on it. I would like to tell me where to find, or about Company D from the time they jumped to the time they left France, especially 1st Platoon.

Thanks!

There are many books that would have a history of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment and several websites.

The US Army published a history of WW2 and the volume related to the D-Day invasion is called "Cross Channel Attack". It shows the landing sites for most of the paratroopers.

There are two books about the 101st Airborne Division that should have details on the 505 PIR.

How many paratroopers were there D Day?

I can't seem to find a total for both 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions."By the end of the day, the 101st Airborne Division had assembled only 2,500 of the 6,600 men who had dropped during the morning hours."Quoted from page 288 of US Army's History of WW2 volume entitled "Cross-Channel Attack".From Service of Supply Militaria & Reproductions-For D-Day, the US airborne divisions landed 3 parachute infantry regiments (PIR) with about 11,000 (TO&E 11,432) troopers in each division. That is for both the 82nd and the 101st. This figure includes all attached units, glider, artillery, and parachute infantry, plus medical, headquarters, etc.http://www.serviceofsupply.com
