According to tradition, Solomon's Temple was the place where God's presence dwelt (1 Kings ch.8). A number of miracles happened there on a regular basis (Mishna, Avot ch.5). It was a place of supreme awareness of God; of great joy; of complete repentance. It has been said that an Israelite who visited the Temple in Jerusalem even just once in his lifetime, became much more pious and God-fearing for as long as he lived.
