The medieval Universities of Western Europe focused on what were called the seven liberal arts. Three of these made up the trivium, which was grammar, logic, and rhetoric. The other four constituted the quadrivium, which consisted of arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music theory.
Advanced programs typically focused on law, medicine, and theology.
