Mammoths were hunted by early humans for two main reasons. First, they were used for food. Secondly, their hide was good for shelter and possibly making clothing.

Even after the extinction of mammoths, the native Siberians engaged in trading mammoth ivory from skeletons.

For tools, for shelter, for fire and for ornaments.

Different bones were used as tools, the long bones and sometimes tusks were used as building braces, rafters and doorways. The small bones were used like we would use firewood today. Pieces of tusk were broken or cut off to carve into ornaments or shaped and sanded into beads.

Like elephants, mammoths used their trunks for many things. Like a hand, a mammoth's trunk was used for grasping food and other objects, for feeling things, and for defense. They were also used for drinking water and to make sounds for communication.

During the Ice Age, hunter gatherers heavily relied on large game animals. Mammoths were probably hunted mostly for food. However, they probably used nearly every part of the animal for something. The hide was used probably for shelter and possibly clothing, and the tusks were often used for engravings.
