Weber's 'Iron Cage' of rationality is one aspect of his notion that modern man is 'disenchanted'. Due to bureaucratic rationalisation and the accelleration of capitalism, we are confined by the capitalist work ethic.

Whereas centuries past consisted of 'value-rational' action (action that was valuable to the actor inandfor itself), modernity for the most part consists of 'instrumental rational action' (where we act towards the ends of employers and institutions). This loss of autonomy and agency leaves us wholly unfulfilled and trapped in an 'Iron Cage'.
