The Mental Health Act, passed in 1983, is an Act of Parliament (statute), which aims to "consolidate the law relating to mentally disordered persons. It gives in statute doctors, social workers and the police powers to detain someone in order to be taken to a place of safety, asessment and to be treated. Though most treatment is voluntarily, doctors may think it necessary to admit someone against his or her will, this is called "sectioning" where two "approved" doctors authorise the patient's detention. It was given royal assent on 9th May 1983. The Mental Health Act 1983: http://www.statutelaw.gov.uk/content.aspx?activeTextDocId=1729080
