What did people do for fun in colonial New Jersey?

They had work parties in order to have fun and get the work done. Examples:

A barn raising party. People in the family would get together or neighbors would come over. Women would cook food while men would build a barn. After the work was done, they sing, dance, eat, chat, and enjoy one another.

A quilting bee. Women would get together and quilt together for fun.

Butchering time. When it was time to butcher the ol' pig. Families would get together or neighbors would come over. They kill and clean the pig together. It was a lot of work. Women had to cook all day and used every ounce of meat from the big.

Other than that, families often sang, danced, and told stories.

Well, there is a lot of things they did for fun. People would read books. Although The Bible was approved and encouraged by puritans, there was a wide variety on topics. People would dance and make music. Puritans did not agree with this idea, but most people would dance to music at weddings, christenings, and other parties! A lot of people enjoyed Board Games and card games such as Chess and draughts. Townspeople gathered in a barn raising. One of my favorite because it is (in my opinion) unusual is the husking bee or corn husking. This is when they got together and husked corn...weird. Women held spinning, sewing, and quilting bees. They were the same idea as the husking bee only with sewing, spinning, and quilting...really weird. Can you believe these were considered parties? EPIC FAIL! Ball games and blood sports were not approved of in their puritan religion, however fishing and hunting were because they were considered as productive sports. In most societies it was common to race horses for fun also. I hope this helps in whatever your doing! ;)
